Snuggle Up to a Bowl Soup – Soupergirl

There is evidence that soup dates back to 20,000 B.C. in the Jiangxi Province of China. These innovating chefs may have dug a pit, filled it with water, and dropped in some hot rocks. With the invention of clay vessels soup-making spread across the globe.

Soup is thought to have healing properties because it is easily digested. It was prescribed as an antidote to physical exhaustion because soup tends to be loaded with vitamins and nutrients. The invention of the spoon improved the experience of eating soup. Soup has evolved from a peasant’s dish, a way to stretch ingredients by adding water, to a dish served to royalty. Every culture has a distinctive soup.

With the cold weather, it is the perfect time to introduce SouperGirl, a mother-daughter duo whose kosher pareve soups, Star-K certified, have gone mainstream. In 2018, they pitched on Shark Tank to investors who were (sadly) unfamiliar with the strict standards required for kosher foods and opted out. That did not prevent this brand from continuing to grow retail sales and expanding to ship nationwide. Soupergirl’s healthy vegetarian home cooking provides satisfying comfort food delivered.

It makes a perfect winter (or year-round) warm meal in a bowl.

Sara and her Mom

Inspired by SuperMom’s Recipes

Sara Polon, former comedian turned entrepreneur created Supergirl based on her mother’s recipes for healthy soup. Sara’s comedic spin is evident on the website in how she describes each product and tells their story, dubbing her mother as the CAO, Chief Anxiety Officer (what Jewish mother isn’t?)  Soupergirl combines simple ingredients and sustainable packaging. They are constantly exploring additional ways to lower their carbon footprint.

Their journey began in a small kitchen space. With patience, persistence, and chutzpah they steadily grew from a small restaurant in Takoma, DC. They expanded into retail stores, developed online distribution, and have become a national brand (available in select Costcos).

On The Menu

Use Soupergirl’s website to select the items you want and schedule delivery. It’s fast and easy. Orders placed after 9 AM EST Monday are delivered the following week. Offerings vary, with seasonal selections to keep things interesting and avoid meal boredom, motivating you to keep checking for newly introduced selections. This model encourages meal planning and showcases the freshness of their offerings.

We were impressed by the packaging of our delivery all of which is recyclable. Enough cold packs surrounded the Soupergirl box to keep the entire order cold through the shipping process, and beyond.

In The Bowl

Soupergirl soup comes in 2 serving 16-ounce microwave-safe containers, making them ideal for travel. If a single serving does not seem enough for a full meal, you can mix and match, adding a 10-ounce high protein bowl or a second soup.

Some seasonal soups include Creamy Pumpkin Bisque, Gingered Sweet Potato, Quinoa Minestrone, and Nine Spice of Winter Vegetables. While the soups are flavorful, they are not overpowering. Some are thicker than others, but all contain recognizable healthy vegetables. The ingredients are simple and clean. For example, in the Creamy Pumpkin Bisque, you find winter squash, carrots, diced tomato, onion, celery, maple syrup, garlic, kosher salt, extra virgin olive oil, sage, and black pepper. (All recognizable, as ingredients you would use at home). It has a homemade taste and texture.

All the products list their calorie count, fiber, and protein content, which lets you make an informed decision from the start.

We liked their cleaver bundles. Soupermom’s Seasonal Faves! and Good Vibes each include six soups. But our favorite idea is The Shabbat In A Box bundle which comes with two different soups and two bowls, a dessert of chocolate chunk cookies, candles, a loaf of vegan challah, a bottle of grape juice, and two candles.  They even have a Passover menu.

Just Heat and Eat

Preparation is easy.

  • Cover the container with a paper towel, and microwave on high for 2 minutes. Another wow factor is the plastic container is microwave-safe, creating one less bowl to wash. Stir, and repeat until it reaches the desired temperature.
  • Or go traditional and heat the soup in a pot on the stove.

Soupergirl takes the preparation out of meal planning. They focused on delivering healthy content, so you can pay attention to life. Their meals are made to travel, and they can be frozen for up to six months.

Our Thoughts

We sampled an eight-pack bulk soup option available at Costco each offering a distinct different and delicious taste. Our favorite was the last one we tried, Soul Warmers Vegetable Chili. This satisfying bowl of chili/soup (which is a little less dense than traditional chili) was filling and nicely flavored. The taste presents a medley of fall/winter vegetables, featuring sweet potatoes and parsnips, combined with traditional spices (cumin, coriander, and chili powder) and pinto beans creating a complete meal in a bowl.

Bowls – Lentil Peanut Slaw Perfection & I Dream of Sesame Noodles & Sweet N’ Crunchy Carrot Bean

From a quick look at their ever-changing online menu, Soupergirl offers options for every palate, sweeter- Lentil Apricot, savorier – Carrot Dill, or Traditional Quinoa Minestrone. They created a veritable soup-lovers paradise and the answer for business travelers who struggle to find kosher meals. The bowls are appealing providing non-soup enthusiasts with satisfying and healthy options including I Dream of Sesame Noodles and Lentil Peanut Slaw Perfection (we loved the names). To compliment these offerings they have Gazpacho, a cold soup.

Pamper yourself delicious plant-based, healthy ready-to-eat meals delivered to your door.  Soupergirl is goodness in a bowl with something for everyone. While cooking can be gratifying, these prepared bowls provide options that taste and feel like home.
