Throwing kiddish of hosting a party? This is the time to try something different and make an impression. While many people consider themselves liquor aficionados, but they limit their focus to popular, well-known brands. At the 2026 Kosher Food and Wine Event, we were introduced to Padre Tequila, certified kosher by the Star K and Jay Kosher – Chabad of Guadalajara. Padre Tequila might be the most distinctive bottle, starting with its bottle stopper, a heavy, solid metallic skull, topping a bottle encased in leather.

It is a love story, where every element, from the 100% Blue Weber Agave to the hand-blown glass, is intended to represent the “magic” of Mexico.

Padre Story

Founded in 2014 by Hans-Peter Eder (born in Austria from a family of distillers) and his wife, Adriana Alvarez Maxemin (from Jalisco, Mexico), to create a high-quality tequila. Padre breaks boundaries led by their master distiller, Erika Sangeado, who is Adriana’s cousin and one of the few female Master Distillers in the industry.

The brand is designed to reflect both heritages. The tequila itself is Mexican, with hand-harvested Blue Weber Agave, slow-cooked in masonry ovens. The precision of the distillation process reflects the Austrian influence.

Attention to Detail

The brand name Padre Azul translates to “Blue Father” (referring to the Blue Weber Agave). Another explanation is that the Mexican slang expression “¡Que padre!”, which means “How cool!” or “How fantastic!”

The stopper serves as a literal “crown” for the bottle, honoring the “Father of Tequila” (the agave plant). The metal stopper is a cast skull representing eternal friendship, and is the central symbol of the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), signifying a bond that transcends life and death, a tribute to loved ones who have passed but remain present in spirit. Additional details supporting this imagery include the “wings” on the sides of the bottle, which are inspired by traditional Mexican engravings. It is intended to show that the tequila inside is the “soul” of the agave, protected by a symbol of Mexican heritage.

A leather sleeve protects the tequila from light, which can degrade the spirit, and it creates a high-end feel that matches the heavy metal skull cap. The hand-laced leather reflects the traditional clothing and saddles of the Mexican Charros (Mexican horsemen or cowboys), the craftsmanship of Jalisco. It features a “corset” style lace-up back that fits the bottle perfectly. The color of the leather and the metal stopper differ for each of the products. White for the Blanco and beige for Reposado. Underneath the leather, the bottle itself is made of hand-blown glass, meaning no two bottles are exactly alike in their subtle imperfections.

Kosher Varieties [100% Agave, 40% abv (80-proof)]

  • Silver Bottle – Blanco – The purest form of Padre. Double distilled, unaged, raw agave, which means it goes straight from the distillation process to the bottle (after a brief 2-week rest in stainless steel)

Made from fully mature agave (8 – 10-year-old), which increases the natural sugar content. They steam the agave hearts (piñas) for 24 to 48 hours in “mamposterías” (stone ovens). This slow process is what creates those vanilla and coconut notes that people sometimes mistake for additives. They do not add yeast, allowing the natural, airborne yeast from the Jalisco valleys to ferment the juice.

Blanco has a “heavy body” for a clear tequila with a smooth finish.

  • Golden Bottle – Reposado – Unlike the Blanco, which is bottled almost immediately, this tequila “rests” in hand-selected French oak bourbon barrels for at least 8 months. This time in the wood transforms the clear liquid into its signature golden hue and picks up the sweet, “golden” flavors of the wood. The tequila has a “velvety” texture with a finish that is much softer than the Blanco, with a long, sweet aftertaste.
  • Bronze Bottle – Anejo is aged for at least 18 months in hand-selected, used American oak bourbon barrels, which creates the deep amber color (with orange highlights) and the “heavy body”. The aging process removes the “bite” often associated with younger tequilas. Of the three, this is the most complex tequila. It is described as having the scent of coffee, burnt caramel, vanilla, and toasted nuts, and a taste of dark chocolate, cinnamon, and caramel, balanced by the natural sweetness of the cooked agave.

Padrecito Organic Tequila (a modern organic sister brand)

Unlike the Padre Azul, which has an old-world charm and flare Padrecito, co-created in 2021 by David Rios (World’s Best Bartender in 2013) and Master Distiller Erika Sangeado, focuses on sustainability and purity, and has a modern vibe. The packaging is designed to be sustainable and recyclable, aligning with the brand’s organic and health-conscious identity.

Padrecito uses agave harvested at 6 years to produce a brighter, punchier, more herbal flavor profile that uses zero additives (no glycerin or sweeteners). It is a very “clean” spirit.

The bottle is minimalistic, with etchings of the tequila production process on the clear glass bottle and a sketch of the skull insignia visible on the cover.

  • Blue Label – Blanco – Unaged (rested 2 weeks) contains notes of fresh-cut grass, sweet peppers, eucalyptus, and cooked agave. It has a “peppery” finish that stands up well in drinks.
  • Gold Label – Reposado – Aged several months in American Oak. Produced using a small-batch approach. It has a light amber/golden color with notes of vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak while still keeping the bright citrus flavor profile of the Blanco.

Tequila, like every liquor, is a matter of personal preference. Padre Azul offers a high-end experience or gift. The heavy metal skull and hand-stitched leather make it a centerpiece for those who value craftsmanship, aesthetics, and luxury. It is smooth and sweet, presenting notes of vanilla and caramel. Padrecito is “Agave Forward” brighter, more herbal, “greener”, cleaner, and 100% organic. Whether you are a collector attracted to the elaborate design of the Padre Azul stopper and leather casing or a modernist who values sustainability, Padre has a top shelf kosher certified tequila for you.
