Plastics are all around us, making it almost impossible to avoid exposure to microplastics. While using plastic is convenient and cost-effective, toddlers and small children may be more vulnerable to the risks of plastics than adults. Their smaller body size means that even a tiny amount of microplastic is a higher proportion of their body weight, and their bodies are rapidly growing, making it difficult to assess the long-term risks. Why worry about exposing a child to microplastics when you can choose suitable substitutes?

Options for limiting the use of plastics include food-grade silicone, stainless steel, and solid unfinished wood. Because toddlers often put things in their mouths and chew on them, we wanted a material that was forgiving to gums and did not easily get scratched or damaged. We discovered wooden toddler and children’s spoons and bowls from Earlywood.

Wood is resilient, withstanding highchair drops and teething. It is natural, made only of American hardwood, which removes any concern of chemicals or plastics, and is easily cleaned with warm water and soap. Earlywood products come in a variety of hardwoods, with distinctive colors that make them perfect for use in a kosher kitchen.

Earlywood wooden spoons are a toddler-tested and parent-approved alternative to plastics, and make a unique, one-of-a-kind baby gift, especially when the spoon is monogrammed.

Why Wood Spoons?

Wood is natural, 100% non-toxic, and sustainable. This makes Earlywood products a healthy choice for the environment and children. Earlywood makes two different-sized spoons, 6.0″ x 1.0″ and 7.0″ x 1.3″. The smaller spoon is designed as a baby’s first feeding spoon, while the larger one is intended for toddlers and features a longer, thicker handle that is designed to grip and maneuver. Our toddler found them easy to use, more substantial and chunkier than a traditional spoon, yet still lightweight. The spoon’s bowl is large and rounded, with soft, sanded edges, helping more food find its way into his mouth.

Their accompanying solid maple child-sized bowls are 6.0″ x 2.25″ and 5.0″ x 1.75″, making them well-sized and light. Best of all, wood is rugged, allowing it to stand up to frequent drops and bangs. Each bowl is unique, showcasing the patterns in the wood.

Together with the matching spoon, this makes an impressive baby gift, easily monogrammed, and a practical, personalized gift-worthy keepsake.Spoon Earlywood

A Future Collectible

These handcrafted items are perfectly imperfect, carved from a single piece of wood, each a unique collectible. Earlywood also makes a wide array of handcrafted kitchen tools, many of which we use as serving pieces. They are light, but strong enough for heavy lifting and mixing, rigid but forgiving enough for scraping pots without causing damage to the cookware.

Earlywood was founded by Brad Bernhart, a mechanical engineer by training. Bernhart began carving wooden spoons as a creative outlet from the structured world of mathematics in the early 2000s. His dream was to produce special family heirlooms, wooden utensils to be passed down for generations, which is exactly what Earlywood does.

Care & Maintenance: Wooden spoons and bowls require simple maintenance. Wash them by hand in hot, soapy water and dry immediately. Do not put them in the dishwasher or leave them to soak. Wooden utensils may get fuzzy after their first few exposures to water, but a quick rub with a Scotch-Brite pad will keep them smooth for life. If they look dry, lather them in as much mineral oil as they will absorb, let them sit overnight, and wipe off any excess oil.

EarlywoodEarlywood products are made to last a lifetime. These handcrafted small wooden spoon and bowl sets may be designed for children, but they are artisan quality, showcasing the elegance and fine craftsmanship of Earlywood.
