Honey Stick for a Neat and Sweet New Year

Dipping apples and challah into honey is a Rosh Hashanah tradition for a shanah tovah umethukah, a good and sweet New Year. Honey provides a sweetness for a year filled with blessings, health, and joy. One interpretation of the symbolism is that bees are non-kosher insects that produce honey that is kosher. This transformation symbolizes the hope that harsh decrees can be turned into mercy, suggesting our ability to create positive outcomes from challenges.

Serving honey without making a mess can be a challenge of its own. Honey pours in a sticky, slow ribbon that clings to everything from the jar to the table. Using a small, delicate wooden honey stick allows you to control the honey, creating an elegant drizzle, enhancing your holiday meal.

Honey Stick

Finding the correct tool makes all the difference. The honey stick from Jonathan’s Spoons MoonSpoon® collection proved how much intentional design matters. The honey stick resembles a spoon, except that the bowl portion is replaced by eleven hexagonal holes, where honey gathers. The stick is 6″ long with a laser-cut celestial pattern on the handle. It is an elegant, artisan creation. Designed for its purpose, a dipper that lets you move honey slowly and deliberately, for a clean drizzle. The honey stick is also perfect to stir honey into your tea.

Crafted from Pennsylvania cherry wood, Jonathan’s Spoons has created an artistic, one-of-a-kind honey stick that is as beautiful and functional as it is durable.

Spootle and Inside-Out tongs

Add Style to Serving

Beyond the honey stick, Jonathan’s Spoons crafts a range of distinctive hardwood tools designed to elevate holiday hosting from the kitchen prep to the final course, and all share the same exceptional craftsmanship.

The Inside-Out Tongs offer an innovative solution, replacing the conventional spring-loaded metal tongs with beautiful wood. At first blush, they appear to be two pieces of tapered wood joined with an interlocking hinge. But flip them around, rotating the arms along the hinge, and voila, they create a spring. The arms each have thin strips cut out. When they are pushed together, they bend, pushing against the notch and creating tongs. They come in several sizes and widths. The cooking tongs are narrower, with an angled tip to get into hard-to-reach corners.

The Forked Salad set is an elegant, everyday set designed for serious salad lovers. It consists of a stylish five-fingered fork and a matching spoon. It is handcrafted from solid wild cherry wood with a slight curve to provide maximum convenience. While we tried the 12″ size, they come in a variety of sizes and colors.

Salad Sets

Jonathan’s Spoons is best known for their spoons. Our favorite was their Spootle, which is a spoon that doubles as a spatula, that measures 12″ x 2 1/2″ x 1/2″ and holds roughly 1 level Tbsp. It is great for stirring the bottom of the pot, shaped to leave no corner untouched, but it is also designed with a spoon-like bowl in the center, perfect for serving. It has been dubbed one of the best wooden spoons made, with a thoughtful touch designed to comfortably accommodate both right- and left-handed cooks.

The same ability to customize is available for their stirring spoon, spatula, and long-handled wok tool. They are lightweight, durable, and striking, with the cherry wood grain lending an elegance to every curve. The wok tool is a particular standout. It is angled to reach deep edges, for effortless tossing and stirring, almost feeling like a natural extension of your hands.

Jonathan’s Spoons classic line emphasizes clean utility, while their MoonSpoon® collection introduces a more whimsical artistic vibe: “We can all see the moon as it rises and sets wherever we live, as a reminder that together we can ponder good thoughts and sweet dreams toward each other.” MoonSpoon’s distinctive blackening gives it a decorative, artsy flair. The craftsmanship is spectacular, making a useful utensil feel a little frivolous and decidedly fancy.

Salt Box and Mini Spoon

We liked their salt box and spoon set, crafted with a notched lid that nests a miniature spoon like a puzzle piece. Sized at 3″ x 3″ x 1 1/2″, the box is beautifully designed for storing salt, spices, or loose tea.  The salt box comes with a nested miniature spoon. These tiny, handcrafted, 3″ wooden spoons, which can be purchased separately, are miniature functional works of art, bringing beauty and charm to everyday moments, ideal for serving condiments, dips, and spreads. They are perfectly designed, as if they were made by elves. Paired with a MoonSpoon® salad set, these pieces, with their laser-cut handle and refined, delicate design, bring a playful refinement to the Yom Tov table.

The rich warmth of hardwood pairs naturally with the autumnal themes of Rosh Hashanah. Jonathan’s Spoons and the MoonSpoon® collection offer a rare balance of kitchen utility and handcrafted artistry. Each piece is a functional work of art. They are beautiful as well as practical, making cooking and drizzling honey into an elegant beginning to a sweet new year.

Jonathan’s Spoons: In 1977, while apprenticing at a furniture store, Jonathan noticed he forgot to bring a spoon for lunch and created his first design from a scrap of wood. Combining his background in art and design, he created useful items with aesthetic appeal from wood.  The spoons evolved into a wide range of high-quality items handcrafted from cherry wood.

MoonSpoon® line adds laser-cut designs to the wood, adding character and charm to complement the functional design. Born from a collaboration between Jonathan and his wife, Julia, the collection began with a single moon motif laser-cut into a wooden handle. It has expanded to include dozens of motifs across more than 30 utensils. Their signature blackened edging lends a crisp, graphic contrast to the warm wood grain, transforming practical tools into delightful conversation pieces.
