We’ve Got That Covered

How often do you find yourself searching for a missing lid? It can be especially difficult on Yom Tov and Shabbos when there are so many courses, and containers to deal with. Relying on precut aluminum foil offers immediate relief, but it is wasteful and does not produce an air-tight seal so it can leak. In addition, aluminum foil is opaque creating a refrigerator filled with mystery contents. Keeping leftovers refrigerated and easily accessible was a challenge until we discovered the resealable flexible silicon lids from Lékué, which we found to be versatile, flexible, and rugged.

The Challenge of Storing Leftovers

Cleaning up after a holiday meal typically creates a messy refrigerator full of random containers. Most of the time the covers are opaque. When hungry snackers forage for food they need to take out the containers, to peek inside which results in a messy, disorganized refrigerator. Especially when leftovers are repacked into identical metal tins covered by aluminum foil.

Using glass bowls for food storage makes for easier stacking but creates a logistical nightmare, in finding the matching cover and the plastic covers can crack with age and use.  Reusable silicon lids offer a solution, they come in a variety of sizes, stretching to fit everything imaginable, and conforming precisely to the shape of the item you are storing.

We used the lids to cover parve items, and in a matter of minutes, we cleared the table, placing leftovers in the refrigerator, with the contents visibly recognizable, covered only by the transparent silicon.

Flexible Reusable Lids

Our experience with flexible reusable lids was remarkable. Initially, we were skeptical questioning what could these oddly shaped silicon lids fit on we quickly discovered that the answer was just about everything.  The lids look like a smashed hat or an accordion, with a waist.  Optically, they seemed small, and we wondered what to do with them, we tried them and were amazed. The silicon stretched, and the tight middle provided a strong seal, which prevented spillage, and odors and kept the lid firmly in place. Pressing down on top forms a hermetic seal.

Lékué lids are reusable and made from 100% platinum silicone, they are designed to provide an airtight fit for items of variable shapes. They stretch to fit containers with different diameters, since they mold to the shape of an item, they can be used to cover even odd-shaped things like cut fruits. Some things we tested it on were half of a pineapple and an avocado. Smaller lids are suitable for covering cans or drinks.

Lékué reusable lids are dishwasher safe and can safely go into the refrigerator. They are designed for temperatures from -76ºF to +428ºF.

Other manufacturers sell reusable lids designed as replacements for lost covers. They tend to be more rigid, positioned as being universal, fitting similarly sized containers. But they cannot accommodate oddly shaped items and often do not form as strong a seal as Lékué.
