An Evening of Alton Brown is pure entertainment, which we were fortunate to see at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on October 24. This two-hour, one-man show is advertised as “stirring up fresh twists” on Brown’s greatest hits. It was an evening designed to tickle the audience’s funny bone.

The performance was up close and personal, delivered in his soft-spoken, witty style, immediately charming us. He moved fluidly between on-stage cooking demonstrations projected onto an enormous screen and sharing hilarious true stories (now that the statute of limitations has run out).

We appreciated his subtle sense of humor, perfect comic timing, and boyish excitement. Brown is a master storyteller and accomplished performer who simplifies the science of food. He delivered a delightful evening of outrageous concoctions and crazy situations, taking the audience into his confidence as partners in crime.

The evening began with a solitary figure behind a large standing desk, but the more he spoke, the bigger his presence grew until the theater overflowed with laughter and applause.

Alton Brown

Who is Alton Brown

As an American television personality, author, and food scientist, Alton Brown fundamentally changed culinary television by combining cooking with chemistry, history, comedy, and technique.

He studied drama and telecommunication arts at the University of Georgia before beginning a career directing television commercials. In the mid-1990s, he felt standard cooking shows missed the mark. They shared recipes but failed to explain the science behind the food or ‘why’ it worked. So, he attended culinary school to learn the fundamentals, and in 1998, he created Good Eats, which combines food, science, and comedy (and earned a Peabody Award). His other accomplishments include appearing as the commentator on Iron Chef and Cutthroat Kitchen.

Throughout his performance, he shared his experiences from these shows.

Our Reaction

Brown opened the show by explaining how he tried to summarize his lifetime of learning into a few salient points. He refers to it as his Manifesto (which he continues to revise, restate, and update). An Evening of Alton Brown is structured for him to share his top ‘Ah-Ha’ observations. The show, and his observations, were unexpected and hilarious.

For us, the highlight of the evening was when Brown brought out equipment that resembled oversized physics experiments. He cooked on a restaurant-size wok heated by theater lights (claiming that theaters frown on fires) and made ice cream with a large science fiction-style contraption powered by a CO2 fire extinguisher. Each of these segments involved audience volunteers who got to sample the culinary creation they assisted him with. It was good old-fashioned wholesome entertainment.

The show delivers family-friendly comedy, laughing at outrageous stories, marveling at the chemistry behind everyday cooking, and discovering what can happen when AI is used to create recipes. Charming and warm, Brown commands the stage, imparting technical information while sharing a genuinely joyful evening filled with laughter.
