The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue is a true story recounting heroes on a mission to rescue their family from Kibbutz Nahal Oz on October 7th. Retired Israeli General Noam and his wife Gali Tibon received a text from their son Amir, that they could hear shooting and Arabic just outside their window, and the IDF was not there. They told Amir to stay in the saferoom and immediately set out from Tel Aviv, with Gali driving, while Noam was on his phone trying to contact the military. The roads were empty; the silence was deafening.

The 95-minute documentary is gripping, as it recounts their events on October 7. It uses videos livestreamed by Hamas during the attacks, along with footage from security cameras in the kibbutz, and highway traffic cams. The documentary includes interviews with Noam, Gali, Amir, and daughter-in-law Miri, letting us know the outcome was positive.  As the events played out on the screen, we were on the edge of our seats. The Road Between Us delivers a powerful gut punch. It is emotional, heroic, and real.

True Heroes:

Noam and Gali’s mission impacted more than their family. They rescued a couple fleeing the Nova music festival and drove them to a safe zone, evacuated wounded Israeli soldiers, and helped more than 400 people leave Kibbutz Nahal Oz.

Kibbutz Nahal Oz:

Kibbutz Nahal Oz is located in southern Israel, separated from Gaza by a road and a fence. The Israeli military was overly confident that it was safe. They assured the residents that “not even a butterfly can pass the fence without us knowing,” and if there was a problem, military support would be there in minutes. But on October 7, 2023, it took eight hours for the IDF to arrive. The attack claimed the lives of 60+ Israeli soldiers and 15 civilians.

The Ultimate Rescue

The documentary presented events as Noam and Gali experienced them. The roads were empty, and the absence of the Israeli military was surprising. As they neared the Nova Music Festival, they saw the bodies, wrecked cars, and terrified people seeking shelter.

Noam’s military experience kicked in, assessing risks, obstacles, and opportunities. He decides that Gali will wait in a shelter, while Noam proceeds to the Kibbutz. Later, Gali drives a critically wounded soldier to safety, saving his life.

The documentary shows. Amir, waiting with his family in the safe room. They hear machine gun fire close by, their phones are losing power, and their children are getting restless. He places his hope on his father, who came to the rescue, guns blazing.

A Wake-Up Call

While the documentary focuses on the rescue mission undertaken by grandparents protecting their family, and saving countless of others,  the violence and death they witnessed was deeply disturbing. It has been two years since the attack, and memories are beginning to fade. The Road Between Us reminds us to be outraged. An attack of this kind should never have happened.

It reminds us not to be lulled into a false sense of security. Even the safe rooms were not sufficient protection for a prolonged onslaught by terrorists with machine guns. The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue is an unbelievable true story. We breathe a sigh of relief when Noam knocks on the window of his family’s safe room and finds them safely inside. Unfortunately, not all the members of the kibbutz were as fortunate.

The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue offers a story of resilience, determination, and heroism.
