The UK Green Party’s War on Zionism
By Moshe Phillips
On October 4, the UK Green Party passed a reckless resolution. It declared Zionism a form of racism, demanded an end to all arms sales to Israel, and endorsed eliminating Israel as a Jewish state. Wrapped in high-minded language, the party claimed: “The Green Party is an anti-racist party and has consistently opposed the illegal occupation of both Palestinian and Syrian land, [and] called for an end to arms sales to the Israeli government ….”
This statement is not an expression of integrity. It is a morally bankrupt perversion of history and security. It whitewashes Islamic religious extremism. It targets the world’s only Jewish state by rejecting its right to exist.
Ignorance of History: Gaza, the PA, and the Myths of “Occupation”
The UK Green Party blames Israel for every hardship in the region. This obsession relies on total historical erasure. The claim that Israel holds complete military rule over Arab Palestinian life is demonstrably false.
Fully 98% of Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank live under the direct governance of the Palestinian Authority (PA). Israel’s military administration vacated these population centers in the mid-1990s. The PA runs the courts, schools, media, police, and daily civil administration. Mahmoud Abbas is now in the 21st year of his four-year presidential term. He and his security force of roughly 70,000 men govern these residents—not Israel.
The UK Greens’ rhetoric surrounding Gaza is even more appalling. Israel completely withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005. It dismantled every settlement and removed all civilian and military presence. For over 21 years, no Israeli civilians have lived in Gaza.
Hamas launched a horrific, unprovoked invasion of southern Israel on October 7, 2023. This attack was not a reaction to “occupation.” Hamas overtly named its onslaught “Operation al-Aqsa Flood.” It was an explicitly religious, genocidal attack designed to murder, rape, and kidnap Jewish civilians. “Al-Aqsa” refers to the Islamic name for Jerusalem’s Temple Mount—the holiest site in Judaism, where both Jewish Temples stood millennia before Islam existed. Radical religious violence drove Hamas’s war, not any so-called occupation.
The Reckless Disarming of a Sovereign Nation
The Green Party issued its statement virtually on the eve of the third anniversary of October 7. The timing is profoundly merciless. Its policy prescriptions are even worse.
The Greens demand a complete, global end to arms sales to Israel. This policy would strip the Jewish state of defensive tech like the Iron Dome. It would leave millions of Jews and Arabs unprotected against regional terrorist forces. Implemented worldwide, it leaves Israel defenseless and invites a far more catastrophic future attack. Depriving a democracy of the tools to defend its people against violent jihadists is not anti-racism. It is a blatant endorsement of mass slaughter.
Furthermore, labeling Zionism as “racist” fails basic linguistic and legal reality. Neither Israeli Jews nor Palestinian Arabs constitute a distinct “race.” Israel is a multi-ethnic democracy. Israeli Muslim Arabs serve as Supreme Court justices, parliamentarians, doctors, and military officers with full civil and political rights under the law.
Who Defines Jewish Identity?
Perhaps the most patronizing part of the resolution is its smug assertion that “anti-Zionism should not be equated with antisemitism.”
Non-Jews have no right to dictate what constitutes bigotry against an indigenous minority. For the overwhelming majority of Jews worldwide, Zionism is not just a political idea. It is an intrinsic element of their religious, cultural, and national identity, rooted in 3,000 years of continuous connection to their ancestral homeland.
The UK Green Party consists mostly of non-Jews. Voting to redefine the core national liberation movement of the Jewish people as “racism” is an act of supreme arrogance. It strips Jews of the right to self-definition—a right progressives grant to every other group.
The UK Green Party has traded genuine human rights advocacy for dangerous extremism. It has abandoned moral clarity. Calling for the disarming and dismantling of the world’s only Jewish state—only 81 years after the liberation of Auschwitz—is just plain evil.
