Gourmet Kosher Foods Delivered
By Chef David
People living in New York City or Brooklyn have access to a wide selection of gourmet kosher cheeses produced by The Cheese Guy. Most kosher consumers are not that lucky, finding it a struggle to find high-end products. Worry no more, Block and Wedge ships these cheeses paired with gourmet products anywhere across the United States.
Block and Wedge began by ordering a few cases of cheese from Brent Delman, The Cheese Guy which they sold locally. Their connection was through, Brent’s brother. It was a perfect relationship, The Cheese Guy does not provide shipping but Block and Wedge does!
They have expanded into a business that ships kosher cheese and artisan foods across the country. They do it well. Each package is professional, with a personalized note included.
Meet the Block and Wedge Team
The team, located in Columbus Ohio, is small and efficient. Todd, a graphic designer, oversees the creative side of the business. David, battalion chief in the local fire department, handles the business development, he is the practical side. Ester, a part-time teacher takes care of customer service and shipping. Together they have solved the logistic issues which limited access to high-quality kosher products.
The Cheese Guy – A Living Legend
Brent Delman devoted the past two decades to mastering cheese making. He uses the highest quality ingredients and creates extraordinary tastes with small-batch artisanal production. His cheeses are certified OU-Dairy with some varieties that are Chalav Yisrael. He might just have something for every palate, and every use. Need something spreadable? He sells a hint-of-lemon goat cheese. Looking for a bold taste there is spicy jalapeño pepper jack, pungent blue cheese, or hoppy craft beer cheddar. For the more traditional consumers, there is mild cheddar or Monterey Jack. His website is extensive, with a huge selection of cheeses to choose from, and Block and Wedge is his distribution arm.
Brent earned his MBA from George Washington University in 1990 and has been an entrepreneur since junior high, with a string of local business ventures from window washing to landscaping. He grew up in the Midwest and embraced the small business spirit and agripreneurship. He partners with many family-owned dairy farms from Upstate NY, Vermont, Northeastern Ohio, and Wisconsin. These farms do not use added hormones, and their animals are pasture-raised or grass-fed.
As his brand grew, so did his product line, adding “fine pairings” items that complement the cheeses. This includes fresh pasta, biscotti, crackers, pesto, preserves, and balsamic vinegar. Each one is fresh and full-flavored. The biscotti and crackers are pareve, which makes them perfect for any meal.
Block and Wedge Delivers
The Block and Wedge’s packages are of the same high standards as The Cheese Guy’s products, their offerings are “The Box” which was well packed keeping the contents safe, and expertly presented, making it exciting to open. The string tie was secured with an embossed seal, simple and elegant. We enjoyed their names, “The Board” a cheese board, knife, and cheese, and “The Bag” which contains a smaller quantity of goodies, even Purim Mishloach Manot Gift Kits, for the DIY gifting experience.
After sampling the cheese, we ran to find a New York City store to buy more! These cheeses are unlike any store-bought kosher cheese. They each had texture, and taste, so much so that you could distinguish between them blindfolded. Our favorite was the Parmesan with Cheddar Notes was crumbly with delicious crystals. The Queso De Cabra (goat cheese) was spreadable with a distinct flavor while the Organic Sharp Cheddar (aged 18 months) was solid with a bold flavor profile. They are cheeses to be savored!
We enjoyed The Cheese Guy’s Rustic Italian Crackers, which are oven baked, not fried, for a crisp crunch. Our favorite flavor might have been the Sun-Dried Tomato with Rosemary voted a close second.
Our box also included other gourmet brands, like Pan’s mushroom jerky, made of shiitake mushrooms presenting a slightly sweet umami flavor, with a wonderful mouthfeel. We were surprised by how delicious and healthy (a great source of Vitamin D) we thoroughly enjoyed each bite it was one of our favorite things in the box.
No surprise that the Cheese Guy’s balsamic vinegar was in a class of its own. This thick and creamy Italian Balsamic Vinegar has a sweet and sour taste, which made it ideal for challah-dipping. We also sampled a savory jar of Wilder Horseradish Mustard and sweet artesian chocolates from hard-to-locate brands including Seattle Chocolate, Stroopwafel, and Jcoco.
