On August 17 at 7 pm at the Rodda Center in Teaneck, I will be presenting “Fit Body, Sharper Minds,” a presentation targeted towards teens and their parents but open to the general public. I want to reach out to all types of academic students: from academic overachievers to those students who may be struggling in school. I will show you the science that proves that a “Fit Body” equals a “Sharper Mind.”

I also want to reach students who are at different physical fitness levels: from kids who already play a sport but want to explore ways of being fit, not just for a season, but overall throughout the year, to those teens who are not interested in sports but still want to be physically fit.

My presentation will explain in detail how small, easy fitness, lifestyle, and dietary tweaks, done consistently, can have a big impact on how you feel physically and emotionally, with the bonus of making you a better student!

Although I still have a lot to learn about this topic, I believe I can impart helpful information, based on my intensive scientific research and my personal experience.

When I started my physical fitness journey several years ago, I never imagined that I would also go on a completely different intellectual journey exploring the science behind the mind-body connection. Fitness, with an emphasis on strength training, has become more than just a fun hobby for me:  it has become a lifestyle game-changer. And the more I learn about the positive impact of physical fitness and healthy habits, the more I realize I want to share this important knowledge with other people.

At first, I wasn’t sure if, as a teenager, I could increase public awareness, but then I realized something I could do. So, last August, I contacted Elie Katz, a Teaneck Township Council member, and Teaneck Mayor Mark Schwartz. They invited me to make a slide presentation to the Teaneck Township Council, encouraging the township to join the New Jersey Mayor’s Wellness Program, a statewide initiative, which I did, and the resolution passed unanimously.

In the months after my presentation, I worked with Mr. Michael Meyer, the Health Officer for the Teaneck Department of Health and Human Services, to prepare publicity flyers showcasing the many outdoor fitness opportunities for Teaneck residents.

At the same time, I decided to explore a possible correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement in adolescents by reviewing the current scientific literature. My research, which was prepared for the TABC Scholars Program, uncovered scientific clinical studies documenting the positive effects of physical fitness on adolescent academic performance. In fact, the results were overwhelmingly positive.

Using the knowledge I have gained, I have reworked my scientific scholar’s presentation to make it more accessible to the public, and I am really excited to present it to the Teaneck community!
